Description

The rhetoric and practice around “funding what works”—scaling the impact of programs that have proven success rates—runs the risk of perpetuating a nagging problem for the nonprofit sector: excellent programs cannot exist without healthy organizations. The fact is that nonprofits are enterprises. Many funding and management practices—some of which aim to be best practices—do not embrace this and the nonprofit sector struggles because of it. Yet many grantmakers are not trained to assess enterprise health.

During this webinar, Rodney Christopher of the F.B. Heron Foundation will expand on the importance of understanding nonprofits as enterprises and how this is central to Heron’s enterprise capital grantmaking practice. To make the concept tangible, he will clarify the important distinction between revenue and capital and share how Heron uses the Nonprofit Finance Fund/GuideStar Financial SCAN as a starting place to understand the enterprise health of nonprofits.

About the presenter:

Rodney Christopher is a director on the capital deployment team at the F.B. Heron Foundation, where he contributes to Heron’s efforts to invest 100% of its endowment for mission—which includes making sizable multi-year grants to nonprofits to help them achieve greater impact while building and maintaining a healthy enterprise. Previously, he spent 15 years building the consulting practice at Nonprofit Finance Fund, a national nonprofit organization that unlocks the potential of mission-driven organizations through tailored investments, strategic advice and accessible insights.
